Anton Kraft was born in Rokitzan, Bohemia. From 1778 until 1790, he was employed as court musician in Prince Eszterházy’s court orchestra. Joseph Haydn, Kapellmeister at Eszterháza, was his teacher. Haydn dedicated his Cello Concertos to Kraft. Moreover, the cello part of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Triple Concerto was purportedly written with Kraft’s abilities in mind.

Kraft himself composed many works for his own instrument as well as three Duos for Violin and Violoncello. His works are clearly influenced by the compositorial style of his mentor Haydn, combining the rigorous structure of the classical style with the free expression of Sturm und Drang.
